GLS paddle

Members Only: Paddle at George L. Smith State Park

Guests will paddle a total of about four miles on the 412-acre mill pond, with views of the circa 1880 mill house as well as a trek on some more challenging ‘pinball’ trails through the cypress trees.

The guided tour will start at 10:30 a.m. and will do two separate loops in opposite directions, stopping back at the same boat ramp for a picnic lunch break. Paddling will be finished by about 2 p.m.

The state park requires a $5 parking pass for each vehicle. Guests are welcome to bring their own canoe or kayak. A limited number of kayaks are available to rent from Mill Pond Kayak.

Birds and Bins

Birds and Bins

Ogeechee Audubon & Ogeechee Riverkeeper co-leaders will help locate and identify birds, educate us about the southern part of the watershed while we clean up the waterways.

We will search for wading birds, raptors, woodpeckers and other early winter resident birds. Loaner binoculars and litter collection supplies will be available.

Forest Ecology

This month's education activity focuses on tree identification. Find a tree in your backyard, school playground, community park. Look at the different characteristics (leaf shape, size, color; bark; height, trunk width; etc.) and identify your tree.

Include a picture of your tree or your artistic representation and send it to us at info@ogeecheeriverkeeper.org!

Sign up to sample the Vernon

ORK is looking for volunteers who are willing to take samples as we work to Protect the Vernon. Citizen scientists will be trained by ORK staff and assigned a location to monitor within the Vernon watershed. The data collected with be crucial in helping identify and fix water quality issues.

Sign up to be alerted for the next training session.

Volunteers needed

In partnership with Keep Liberty Beautiful and Hinesville Downtown Development Authority, Ogeechee Riverkeeper will co-host a Rivers Alive litter cleanup. Volunteers will meet in a central location in Hinesville for supplies and instructions before being assigned specific spots for cleanup.

This event is limited to 30 participants. Volunteers should register in advance.
