Victory in Jenkins County!

Citizens of Jenkins County won their fight against a proposed regional landfill. Atlantic Waste cancelled their permit application.

ORK assisted residents in organizing their message, promoting their petition, and navigating the official steps of permitting.

The People of Jenkins County Against Landfill issued this statement upon learning of Mr. Wall’s decision. “We are very pleased, just as we know the vast majority of the Jenkins County residents are, that Mr. Wall has made the decision to withdraw his application for the expansion of the county landfill." Read more in The Millen News.

ORK advocates for protection of water quality and opposes the creation of landfills which may pose a threat to any waters in the Ogeechee River Basin.

More about Kris

Kris has dived in Belize and worked in Alaska, but he returned to his native Georgia to protect local waterways. He describes his job as the Ogeechee River watchdog. “Much of what I do is based on sampling and monitoring the river and its tributaries to ensure the water quality is where it needs to be.”

Annual photography contest

This will be the first year ORK will consider sponsorships! Contact ORK if you have a business that would like to contribute to the photography prizes. Submissions are due by November 6 and winners will be announced early December 2023.

Blackwater Barons

ORK has teamed up with local artist Juliana Smith to create a custom artwork entitled “Blackwater Barons” featuring the plants and wildlife in the Ogeechee River watershed. Juliana designed the piece, carved the linocut by hand, and pulled a limited number of prints. Each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Members Only: Photography workshop

ORK and Parker Stewart will host a members-only nature photography workshop on October 7. This low country landscape photography workshop will focus on how to best capture the water, light, flora, and fauna, and ways everyone can use photography as a tool to tell a story about a place and its beauty.

Hunting and fishing seasons

Everyone can be environmental stewards and lead by example with responsible and ethical outdoor practices, especially when it comes to hunting and fishing. Learn more about deer hunting season dates for the entire Ogeechee River Basin.

Legal advocacy

One of ORK's roles is to provide expert comments on applications regarding water quality impacts. Recently, ORK has written official responses to the following:

  • Desnoyers Industrial Park wetlands fill, US Army Corps of Engineers
  • Warehouse zoning variance, Bryan County
  • Sandersville Railroad, GA Public Service Commission
